The character one

A small space handled well, rather than a large one handled plainly

A polished, characterful base for a weekend in wine country. It is a small space handled well rather than a large one handled plainly, and it is the one most often mentioned when guests describe the inn to other people.

A queen bed under an ornate vintage mirror, plush bedding, bold cushions and a patterned runner. The ensuite has a walk-in shower and eco-friendly toiletries, and there is a smart TV, bar fridge and tea station on the far side. This is the one that best expresses what the building actually is.

Who books it

Couples on a Hunter Valley weekend who want the character rather than a beige box, and who would rather spend the evening at a restaurant in town than in the room.

Fitting it to the trip

The cellar doors are a ten to fifteen minute drive north-west, and the restaurants of Vincent Street are a walk. Book a driver or a tour for the tasting day and you can leave the car here from check-in to check-out, which is the whole reason to stay in the town centre.

Worth saying plainly

This is a couple's space and nothing more — there is no room for a third bed, and the decoration is genuinely bold. Guests who want a plain, neutral setting are better off in the Queen Room, which costs less and makes no attempt at drama.

For couples

Questions couples ask

Anything not answered here, call (02) 4991 4712 — reception can confirm bedding, access and availability in a minute.

How is this different from the Queen Room?

Decoration, mostly. Both have a queen bed, a private ensuite and identical inclusions. The Deluxe is the more styled of the two — vintage mirror, bold cushions, patterned textiles — while the Queen Room is plainer and cheaper. Neither is larger by much.

Can a third guest stay?

No. This one takes two guests. If there are three of you, the Twin Room or one of the family options will suit better — call reception and we will tell you what is free on your dates.

Can we walk to dinner?

Yes. The inn is on Vincent Street in the middle of Cessnock, with restaurants, pubs and cafés within a short walk. That is the practical case for staying in town rather than out among the vineyards.

Is it suitable for a special occasion?

For guests who like heritage buildings and bold decoration, yes — it is the most characterful thing we have. If the occasion calls for vineyard views and a resort, we would honestly point you to Pokolbin instead.

How early can we get to a cellar door from here?

Most Hunter Valley cellar doors open mid-morning and are a ten to fifteen minute drive away, so there is no need to rush breakfast. Check individual opening times before you set out, as they vary by winery and by season.
